Chloropicrin effectively manages diseases and prevents plant stunting in sweet potato fields.
Chloropicrin is found to be one of the most effective in disease management for sweet potato growers. Chloropicrin aids in the prevention of plant stunting in the field which are caused by multiple stress factors. These factors including many soil-borne diseases and nematode pressure. Effects from soil borne pests combine to reduce yield and crop quality.

Preplant treatments were applied on April 26th in 1 row plots 46 inch wide and 30 foot long replicated 4 times in a randomized-block design in a silt infested with S. ipomoea near Grand Prairie. Chemicals were injected 9 inches deep with a fumigun in an opened row and were covered immediately after application with 8-10 inches of soil thrown by disc hillers. Injections were made at 6 inch intervals in one line down the center of the row, or at 12 inch intervals staggered in two lines 12 inches apart on top of the row. Soil moisture and tilth were excellent for application. Plots were planted on May 11th with Centennial variety cuttings, 25 plants/plot. The first 30 days after planting were exceptionally cool with abundant rainfall, conditions which were not conducive to sever soil rot development. Sweet potatoes were harvested, graded, and weighed on September 18. Pounds/plot were converted to 50-lb. bushels/A.
